How progressive dialing works — one call per agent, advanced automatically
A progressive dialer places one call per available agent, then advances to the next record automatically the moment the agent is ready. Nothing dials ahead of the team, so an answered call is never left waiting for a human — that one-to-one pacing rule is the entire identity of the mode, and Genesys and NICE both document it exactly that way.
It’s the middle rung of the outbound ladder: faster than preview dialing, where the agent reads the record and chooses when to dial, and deliberately slower than predictive, which launches calls before agents are free.
One honesty note before the details: Enzo’s named modes are power, predictive, and preview — what the industry calls progressive dialing is single-line power dialing with automatic pacing, and that mode is included on every Enzo seat from $99 per month. What is progressive dialing?
Progressive dialing is outbound pacing with the dial ratio pinned at one-to-one. In Genesys Cloud’s documentation, progressive mode automatically dials one contact per available agent and performs call analysis before each call is matched to an agent; Genesys also documents a “precise” variant that reserves agents specifically to minimize abandonment.
NICE’s glossary defines a progressive dialer the same way: one call per agent at a time — so the system won’t abandon calls — with the agent connected when a live person answers. Both definitions are per vendor documentation as of July 2026.
Two properties fall out of that definition. First, throughput is capped by the team: the system can never have more calls in flight than it has agents. Second, abandoned calls are rare by design, because every dial has an agent attached before it’s placed. Every other trait people ascribe to progressive dialing — safer, slower, steadier — is downstream of those two.
Worth flagging: NICE’s same glossary entry also says a progressive dialer “presents contact information to an agent before dialing,” which is what most of the market calls preview mode. Even the vendors writing the definitions blur the lines — more on the naming mess below.
How does a progressive dialer work?
The progressive dialing mode runs a simple loop:
- An agent becomes available. They wrap a call, finish after-call work, and the system marks them ready.
- The system dials exactly one contact for that agent. The next record comes off the campaign list — no queue of speculative calls, no dialing ahead.
- Non-connects are filtered. Busy signals, no-answers, and invalid numbers are logged without consuming agent time; in Genesys’s implementation, call analysis runs before the call is matched to the agent.
- A live answer reaches the waiting agent, who already has the record on screen.
- Disposition, next record, repeat.
The pace comes from the agents, not from a statistical model: the faster the team wraps calls, the faster the list moves. Five9 describes its progressive mode as adaptively controlling dialing pace based on campaign performance — adjusting to how calls are actually resolving rather than predicting availability in advance, per its product pages as of July 2026.
One mechanical detail worth asking any vendor about: that call-analysis step is where some platforms run answering machine detection (AMD), deciding whether the voice on the line is a person before an agent hears anything. Enzo does not use AMD in any mode — the agent hears the ring and the greeting live, the way a manual dial sounds, so there’s no detection delay for the person answering to notice.
“Progressive,” “power,” “preview”: the naming problem
The machines are simple; the labels are not, and the confusion is documented. At Genesys and NICE, progressive means strict one-call-per-agent pacing. But “power dialer” means a fixed multi-line ratio per agent at Five9 and Genesys, a fixed non-adaptive dial level at Convoso, and — completing the circle — Koncert brands its single-line dialer an “AI Power Dialer.” The same words point at different machines depending on whose brochure you’re reading.
So when a vendor pitches a progressive dialer system, don’t nod — ask two questions. How many calls go out per available agent? And does the pace come from a statistical model, or advance only when an agent is ready? One line with agent-ready pacing is progressive dialing (or single-line power dialing — same machine). Several lines per agent is parallel dialing. A model that dials ahead of the team is predictive, whatever the pricing tier is named.
Where Enzo lands: Enzo’s named modes are power, predictive, and preview, in single-line and multi-line configurations. Enzo doesn’t sell a SKU called a progressive dialer — what vendors mean by progressive dialing is single-line power dialing with automatic pacing, and on Enzo that’s power mode on one line. Same machine, plainer label.
Progressive dialing in a call center
A progressive call dialer earns its keep on outbound floors that are too small — or too careful — for predictive pacing. Vendor guidance is explicit about the size line: Five9 positions progressive for fewer than 10 active agents and predictive for 10 or more, while Genesys recommends roughly 15 agents before its predictive algorithm has enough data to pace accurately (each per its own documentation — vendor-specific guidance, not an industry rule).
Below that scale, predictive statistics get lumpy: too few agents means the model swings between idle time and abandoned calls, and a one-to-one outbound progressive dialer is simply the steadier machine.
The caution case matters as much as the size case. Under FCC rules (47 CFR 64.1200), no more than 3% of live-answered telemarketing calls per campaign may be abandoned over each successive 30-day period — one line on that here, because the detail belongs to our TCPA guide for cold callers, which is education, not legal advice.
Progressive pacing sidesteps most of that exposure structurally: an agent is attached to every dial before it goes out, so the failure mode predictive teams tune against barely exists. That’s why floors answering to legal reviewers, carriers, or franchise brands often standardize on one-call-per-agent modes even when they have the headcount for predictive.
Around the pacing engine, a call center still needs call-center plumbing: dispositions that feed the list, supervision, and somewhere for callbacks to land. On Enzo those pieces ride on the same seats — whisper and barge-in for live coaching, optional call recording, dashboards, inbound routing so returned calls reach an agent, campaign scheduling, and campaign-level internal DNC lists (they don’t carry across campaigns, and Enzo does not scrub against government DNC registries — that scrub is your process, before upload).

The mechanics under the table: a predictive dialer launches more calls than there are free agents and — as Convoso’s documentation puts it — disconnects from unsuccessful calls before the agent is connected, so agents move from one live answer to the next while the machine absorbs the ringing. When the pacing bet wins, that’s the highest-throughput agent-driven mode there is. When it loses, a person answers to silence.
Progressive never makes the bet in the first place. Neither mode is better in the abstract; they’re priced in different currencies — predictive spends abandonment risk to buy throughput, progressive spends throughput to buy certainty.
When to choose progressive dialing
Choose progressive — single-line power dialing — when:
- Your list converts. Past clients, referrals, inbound follow-ups, decent aged data: when a meaningful share of dials become conversations, an agent should be present for every one of them.
- Your team is small. Under roughly ten agents, predictive pacing has too little data to model well (per Five9’s own positioning), and progressive delivers the automation without the statistical swings.
- You answer to reviewers. Brokers, carriers, legal, franchise compliance — one call per agent is the mode that’s easiest to defend, because the abandonment mechanism mostly isn’t there.
- It’s callback day. Even heavy-volume teams drop to one line for scheduled callbacks and negotiations, where context beats throughput.
Choose something else when:
- The list is long and cold. When most dials go unanswered, one line per agent means agents spend the hour listening to rings. Multi-line dialing — several simultaneous calls per agent, first answer wins — is the throughput answer for small teams, and predictive is the answer on big floors.
- The record needs reading first. For expireds, high-value accounts, and any call where the first sentence must be informed, preview mode — agent reads, then dials — beats every automatic pacing scheme.
On Enzo, all of that is one campaign setting rather than three products: the same seat runs power dialing (single-line, or multi-line at 5 lines on Starter and up to 14 on Standard, pooled across agents), predictive, and preview.

To say it once more, plainly: Enzo doesn’t market a progressive dialer, because the mode already has a name here — power dialing on a single line.
