Yes — VICIdial® is open-source under AGPLv2, and vicidial.org states there is “no software licensing cost.” The license is the only free line item, though: add servers, SIP trunk minutes, DIDs, and admin labor, and CloudTalk’s estimate (updated July 2026) of realistic VICIdial cost lands at $130 to $400+ per agent per month. Here’s the teardown — self-hosted, official VICIhost, and third-party hosting — next to a cloud dialer with a published $99 seat.

What “free” actually covers — and what it doesn’t

VICIdial is a full open-source contact-center suite: inbound, outbound, and blended calling with agent-controlled, broadcast, and predictive dialing. It began in 2003 as astGUIclient, Perl scripts for Asterisk — a 20+ year-old codebase maintained since 2007 by the Vicidial Group, founded by original creator Matt Florell and other independent consultants; vicidial.org claims 24,000+ production installations in 100+ countries.

What the download doesn’t include is anything it runs on. Per vicidial.org, you provision the whole stack yourself — Asterisk (1.2–18, 18 preferred), MySQL 5.0+ or MariaDB, Apache, PHP — plus a SIP carrier, DIDs, and someone who keeps it all patched and dialing. “Free software” and “free dialer” are different claims; only the first is true.

VICIdial hosted dialer, option 1: VICIhost — official and quote-only

VICIhost is the Vicidial Group’s own hosted service, running since 2007. It publishes no pricing anywhere on vicidial.com or vicihost.com — both route to a Contact Us page. What the hosting pages do say: dedicated physical servers in Tier-3 datacenters, the ability to move to your own hardware at any time, cellphone number scrubbing, agent audio soundboards, and NIST-approved data encryption.

Three third-party sources triangulate on the same base figures: about $1,000 one-time for the first server (including the first month), $500 per additional server, then $400 per server per month, plus roughly $0.015/min outbound, $0.028/min toll-free inbound, and about $2.50/month per DID (CloudTalk, updated July 2026; ViciStack, March 2026; JustCall). JustCall works the hosting fee out to around $16 per user at 25 agents — before minutes, DIDs, and admin. Software Advice’s listing shows “starting at $400/month” hosted. No trial, seat minimum, or contract length is published — put all three on your quote-call list.

VICIdial hosted dialer, option 2: third-party hosting

A separate market hosts VICIdial for you at published prices. eTollFree lists flat-rate plans: Starter at $99/month for up to 10 agents ($83 billed annually), Professional at $249/month for up to 30 ($211 annually), and a custom Enterprise tier — no setup cost, no long-term contracts, demo only. ViciStack’s survey (March 2026) puts third-party server hosting at $80–$500 per server per month.

These are one host’s packaging of the open-source software, not Vicidial Group pricing. The host absorbs the server layer; you keep the VICIdial admin interface, carrier decisions, and agent training.

What VICIdial reviews say

Software Advice rates VICIdial 4.7/5 across 266 reviews, but the complaints are consistent: an outdated, hard-to-navigate interface, sluggishness switching between leads, no mobile app, and weak reporting. ViciStack’s 2026 assessment adds “a wall of blue hyperlinks” for an admin UI and 2–3x agent ramp time versus modern cloud platforms. There are no native modern CRM integrations either — just per-campaign web-form URLs and the API, with JustCall noting CRM connections, SMS, and QA tooling all require add-ons.

VICIdial alternatives: when a managed cloud dialer costs less than “free”

Dialing runs 5–14 lines per agent, pooled across the team, with power and predictive dialing, whisper, barge-in, recording, and dashboards built in. The $250 buildout is waived on annual plans, and outcomes push to the CRM you already run — native two-way Follow Up Boss, plus GoHighLevel, Salesforce, HubSpot, and ~6,000 tools via Zapier and webhooks.

Against CloudTalk’s $130–$400+ per-agent estimate, a published $99–$188 seat with zero admin payroll is the whole argument. No free trial — the evaluation path is a free 20-minute discovery call.

Where VICIdial is genuinely ahead

• Deep configurability. Campaign logic, telephony behavior, and dial level (lines per agent) are all admin-tunable, with no published cap.
• Battle-tested breadth. Inbound, outbound, blended, broadcast, and predictive in one suite, at 24,000+ claimed installs.
• An exit that keeps your stack. VICIhost lets you move to your own hardware at any time — portability most SaaS dialers can’t offer.

With real Linux/Asterisk skill in-house and volume that amortizes it, VICIdial can be the cheapest option on the board — most teams just shouldn’t assume they’re that team.
